Targeting Tips

Start broad, then narrow: Begin with wider targeting and refine based on data ✅ Layer targeting: Combine 2-3 targeting types for precision ✅ Test regularly: Audiences change; refresh targeting quarterly ✅ Use exclusions: Just as important as inclusions

Avoid over-targeting: Too narrow = limited reach and high costs ❌ Don't ignore data: Let performance guide targeting decisions ❌ Skip single-dimension targeting: Combine demographics + interests

Brand Awareness:

  • Broad demographics
  • Interest-based targeting
  • Lookalike audiences (5-10%)

Lead Generation:

  • Job title + industry (B2B)
  • Interest + behavior (B2C)
  • Lookalike from email list (1-3%)

Retargeting:

  • Website visitors (last 30-90 days)
  • Engaged social users
  • Exclude recent converters

Troubleshooting

Audience Too Small

Issue: "Estimated reach: fewer than 1,000 people"

Solutions:

  • Expand geographic targeting
  • Broaden age ranges
  • Add more interest categories
  • Increase lookalike percentage

High CPM/Low Performance

Issue: Ads are expensive with poor results

Solutions:

  • Refine audience quality over quantity
  • Test different interest combinations
  • Exclude irrelevant segments
  • Consider retargeting instead
